An illustration for the Parsons Illustration Senior Journal reflecting on cultural elements of Hong Kong at risk of being lost amid political changes and urban development.
Brief: Create an illustration responding to the theme "forgotten" for inclusion in the department's graduating class publication.
Challenge: Represent the distinctive Hong Kong experiences threatened by urban renewal, gentrification, technological advances, generational shifts, and political change in a single, meaningful illustration that conveys both personal connection and broader cultural commentary.
I developed an illustration that depicts various cultural elements becoming forgotten due to mainlandization and modernization, using visual storytelling to preserve memories of the city's unique character while commenting on its evolving identity.
The caption is inspired by a quote used in a painting by Hong Kong artist, Chow Chun Fai, who paints scenes from local films in which characters comment on the relationship between Hong Kong and mainland China.
